It’s Messy! Ruth, Converts, and the Messy-ianism of Shavuot

Saturday, June 8, 2019 - Sunday, June 9, 2019 - 11:15 pm - 12:00 am

Check out Romemu’s Rabbi Mira Rivera and Rabbi David Ingber at the JCC on Shavuot.

Rabbi David’s teaching, “It’s Messy! Ruth, Converts and the Messy-ianism of Shavuot” will offer a unique perspective of Shavuot. The agriculture harvest festival of Shavuot was transformed by the rabbis into the holiday of divine revelation, and thus elevating Shavuot as the holiday where G-d’s will is revealed. But, and, it is also the holiday of converts, forever framed that way by the odd rabbinic custom mandating the reading the biblical book of Ruth. The biblical heroine is not only paradigmatic of converts but also the progenitor of King David, who becomes the progenitor of the Messiah. Ruth, converts, kings, and Messiah…it’s pretty messy. We will explore this game of thrones, using the mystical teachings of the Kabbalah as well as the writings of the great Hasidic Masters.
