Chanukah 5784

In our tradition there was darkness before there was light. Chanukah is a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness. As Rabbi Ingber said last Chanukah it is a celebration of “the power of human beings to create light. We light before the moon comes out because we are responsible for bringing the light, not waiting for it to come.” To put it another way, as Rabbi Cohler-Esses said last year, “at Chanukah we re-write the world with light.”

This year for Chanukah our goal is to provide everyone in the community with some much needed light.

Join us to light up the darkness with:

  • a music-filled Shabbat dinner
  • an intergenerational Chanukah celebration at which we will ignite our creativity to lighten our moods, and
  • opportunities each night of the holiday to share our light with others in the community.

Chanukah Celebrations

Chanukah Shabbat Dinner

Join us for Kabbalat Shabbat services at 6 PM and stay for a festive dinner.

Bask in the warm embrace of community with a welcome break from our phones and the news of the day to celebrate Shabbat and Chanukah with prayer, food, and song.

The Romemu Community Band will join us for Kabbalat Shabbat services and stay for the dinner to lead us on in song.

Advance registration for dinner helps us plan to ensure sufficient food for all.

Intergenerational Chanukah Celebration

When was the last time you made a craft project?

Regardless of your age, research shows crafting can your boost mood and relieve stress – who doesn’t need that now!

We’ll have a variety of craft projects suitable for ages 2 to 92. Craft options will include:

  • scrap booking your own Chanukah prayer and song book
  • donut decorating
  • writing cards for soldiers and displaced families in Israel
  • and more.

Once you have relaxed and enjoyed yourself crafting, Rabbi Ingber will share some words of Torah and then we will all light together. Bring your chanukiah (we’ll supply candles and matches).

After the candle lighting we’ll have latkes, donuts, and more to feast on as you continue working on your craft projects or take some time to relax and shmooze.

Register here.

Join in the Zoomagogue

At 5:45 PM we’ll open the Zoom for those joining online to hear the Chanukah teaching from Rabbi Ingber and join in the communal candle lighting. Have your chanukiah ready so we can all light together.

After the candle lighting, the Zoomagogue is invited to stay in the Zoom room for shmoozing.

No need to register to join on Zoom. We’ll post the Zoom link here before the event.

Chanukah Matches

Each night when we light the candles we have the opportunity to invite others to join with us to bring light into the darkness.

The Romemu Chesed Committee invites everyone in the community to be matched with others at Romemu to light together. Whether you would normally light alone and would like to be matched with others for one night or all nights; whether you light each night surrounded by family but welcome more to celebrate with you; or whether you just want to get to know others at Romemu – we would love to help you connect.

We’ll arrange the matches; you decide how you want to connect.

  • You select which night(s) you want to be matched with others.
  • You choose whether you want to welcome others to light in your home, go to someone else’s home, or connect with others to light together online.

Sign up for Chanukah Matches here.
