POSITION: MUSICAL DIRECTOR

ACCOUNTABLE TO: THE RABBI

PURPOSE: To serve the Romemu community by developing, coordinating and administering an effective and well-rounded music program and providing leadership to and supervision of staff members and volunteers involved in this program.

PRIMARY DUTIES: Lead people of all ages in the congregation in music-making experiences so that they: - May grow in understanding a Jewish service and music's role in spirituality - Gain basic music skills so they may effectively serve the Romemu community as music leaders and participants. - Have a transformational prayer experience

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: A typical Romemu service might include: a gospel song, traditional nusach, a Hasidic niggun, and a guided meditation…
• Must be familiar with a wide range of Jewish liturgical styles from Traditional to Reform to Renewal to Hasidic …
• Should ideally be able to play one or more instruments
• Entrepreneurial spirit and orientation

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Coordinate the planning and implementation of a comprehensive music program for the congregation and community that will eventually include a children’s Shabbat service.
2. Help promote the spiritual life of the congregation and its members through music.
3. Guide the work of the music program through the year, including building on the current music committee (currently the “rome’band”), planning its agendas and presiding at its meetings.
4. Organize and conduct all musicians and rehearsals throughout the year.
5. Develop and support effective musical leadership in the shul along with the help of the (Rabbi) and current musicians
6. Link with organizations, people, and resources in and beyond the congregation who create sacred music.
7. Recruit, audition and conduct the adult choir and support the creation of a children’s choir (over time).
8. Support the community musical group that will play on shabbat at designated services.
9. Prepare appropriate music for weddings and special services.
10. Develop and supervise the maintenance of an online music library.
11. Supervise the maintenance of musical instruments, including being responsible for making sure the amplification system is set up correctly.

HOURS OF WORK: This job is approximately 25 hours per week and includes the responsibilities above as well attending the majority of Friday night and Shabbat morning services and Jewish holiday services and events.

COMPENSATION: The salary for this part-time position is commensurate with experience. As a part-time position this job doesn’t offer benefits.
